[0033] Base stations of a wireless communication system are associated with coverage areas. When a mobile device moves outside the coverage area of a base station, it may lose service from a wireless communication system with which it is associated via the base station. Lost services may include MBMS in some cases. To mitigate the chance of MBMS loss, the mobile device may broadcast an out-of-coverage status indicator or MBMS query in a peer discovery message. An in-coverage device (and possibly a mobile device) receiving an out-of-coverage status indicator or MBMS query may then determine whether it is capable of providing relay service (ie, acting as an MBMS relay) for MBMS desired by the out-of-coverage mobile device. Alternatively, the in-coverage mobile device can proactively transition to the MBMS relay state and for which it can provide at least one MBMS broadcast service announcement information for which the relay service is intended. Service announcement informat...
