The invention provides a character input system and method for a portable electronic device. The portable electronic device is provided with a plurality of distance sensors. The character input method includes the following steps: when a user needs performing an input operation, the distance sensors arranged on the portable electronic device are opened, all the distance sensors define different input characters according to different user finger sensing sequences; when a finger of the user is close to a first distance sensor, a display screen of the portable electronic device displays a character corresponding to other each of the distance sensors according to a user input type selected by the user; and when the finger of the user is close to a second distance sensor corresponding to a character input by the user, a character corresponding to the second distance sensor is input into the portable electronic device. According to the character input system and method, the user finger close sequences are detected by the plurality of distance sensors to perform an input operation of different kinds of character information.
