Embodiment Construction

[0044] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0045] Figure 6 is a schematic diagram of an optical transceiver 1 for optical fiber transmission applying the control scheme of the embodiment. The optical transceiver 1 includes a connector 25 for externally inputting and outputting electrical signals, a power source 26, and a signal processor 11. For example, the signal processor 11 performs multiplexing of electrical signals or processing of signals into a form suitable for optical transmission and reception. The optical transceiver 1 also has an optical transmitter 10 , a front-end receiver 21 , and a local oscillator light source 22 . The front-end receiver 21 receives an optical signal from the outside, and detects the signal by converting interference light with local oscillator light into an electrical signal.

[0046] The optical transmitter 10 has a light source 12 for the transmitter, an optical modu...

Abstract

Optical transmitter and bias control method for an optical modulator. The optical transmitter has: an optical modulator with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer; a modulator driver for driving the optical modulator with a drive signal; a low frequency generator for the a low frequency generator for generating a low frequency signal that changes the ratio of the drive amplitude relative to the half-wave voltage of the light modulator; a light detector for detecting a portion of the output light of the light modulator a detector configured to use the low frequency signal to detect a low frequency component contained in a detected signal from the photodetector; and a bias voltage controller configured to control The bias voltage of the optical modulator is used so that the detected low frequency component becomes the maximum value and is in phase with the superimposed low frequency signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optical transmitters and bias control methods for optical modulators. Background technique [0002] In recent years, digital coherent technology has been used to implement 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) long-distance optical transmission through dual polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK). To further increase transmission capacity, narrower spectral bandwidth and higher-level modulation schemes are desired. [0003] In high-speed optical transmission exceeding 10 Gbps, a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator is generally used as an optical modulator. In order to generate a high quality optical signal, the operating point of the optical modulator is kept at an appropriate point with respect to the input drive signal. In the phase modulation scheme, the bias voltage applied to the optical modulator is controlled such that the center of the vibration of the electrical data signal coincides with the lowest point of th...
