The method comprises: after a screen backlight lightening signal is received, an ambient light sensor having an initial ambient light measurement integration period is used for carrying out ambient light detection, wherein the initial ambient light measurement integration period is less than time consumed for screen backlight lightening; according to a detection result of ambient light detection, an ambient light intensity value is obtained; on the basis of the ambient light intensity value, screen backlight lightening operation is carried out; and after the backlight lightening operation, the ambient light measurement integration period is modified from the initial ambient light measurement integration period into a preset value. In addition, the invention also provides a system for setting backlight brightness rapidly. According to the invention, the initial ambient light measurement integration period less than the time consumed by the screen backlight lightening is set and the ambient light intensity value is obtained; and according to the ambient light intensity value, the screen backlight brightness is set.
