Abstract

A scheme for providing access to 6LoWPAN data in a pico-remote radio unit (PRRU) based radio access network. In one embodiment, the PRRU network includes a baseband unit (BBU) coupled via a first set of CPRI links to one or more remote radio hub (RHUB) elements, each RHUB element in turn coupled via a corresponding second set of CPRI links to one or more PRRU elements. The BBU element includes an interface for passing 6LoWPAN data to and from routers coupled to the IPv6 network. The BBU element also contains bridging functionality that operates to determine the address of the endpoint PRRU element and the address of the corresponding RHUB element by querying the address mapping database.
