Abstract

Provides methods for application-level authentication for use with Bluetooth Low Energy devices and accessories. The method includes: receiving an accessory credential from a server; establishing a Bluetooth low energy connection with the accessory; authenticating the accessory; and transmitting data to the accessory. Data transfers can be bulk transfers or data streams. The authentication can be an application layer authentication between the accessory and the device using a shared key and using a hash function. Additional embodiments include methods for over-the-air firmware updates, and methods for device control of Bluetooth low energy accessories.

Such systems and methods enable a new class of low-cost, low-power accessories that can obtain firmware updates or other data transfers while still complying with the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard.
