Embodiment Construction

[0009] The present invention relates to a pump housing secured via a pin that slidably fits within a bore of a clamshell outer housing. Unlike conventional rigid structures with tight tolerances, this assembly allows the pump housing to be displaced laterally within the bore, enabling passive self-alignment of the pump housing with the piston. This self-alignment reduces side loads without tight alignment tolerances.

[0010] figure 1 is a partial axial cross-sectional view of fluid applicator 10 including outer housing 12 , motor 14 , pump assembly 16 (including pump housing 24 , piston 26 and alignment pin 28 ), fluid source 18 , nozzle 20 and drive mechanism 22 . In the depicted embodiment, fluid applicator 10 is a hand-held applicator for fluids such as paint or varnish. In an alternative embodiment, the applicator 10 may be a applicator for a stationary industrial installation or an automated device.

Abstract

A fluid applicator includes a pump motor, a piston, a pump housing, and an outer housing. The piston can be reciprocated by the pump motor. The pump housing includes a pump chamber housing arranged to receive the piston, and a plurality of alignment pins extending laterally away from the pump chamber housing. An outer housing surrounds and anchors the pump motor and has a plurality of inner transverse bores arranged to slidably receive and retain alignment pins such that the pump housing is free to self-align with the piston.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to fluid sprayers, and more particularly to paint sprayer pumps. Background technique [0002] High pressure fluid sprayers typically use a piston or plunger pump to pressurize the spray fluid. Some such systems use wobble plates to convert the rotational motion of the motor into axial reciprocating motion of the plunger or piston. The wobble plate introduces side (lateral) loads in addition to the main axial load. If the piston is misaligned with the pump housing, these side loads can cause rapid heating that can melt or otherwise damage the pump components. To minimize misalignment, most spray systems have tight tolerances for pump and housing parts. Summary of the invention [0003] The present invention relates to a fluid sprayer comprising a pump motor, a piston, a pump housing and an outer housing. The piston can be reciprocated by the pump motor. The pump housing includes a pump chamber housing arranged to...
