Problems solved by technology

However, the use of sampling prevents the tracking of the same data packet across network domains
This limits the type of analysis that can be performed, as information about data packets will vary from node to node, and analysis based on end-to-end tracing of individual data packets cannot be performed

Embodiment Construction

[0023] The following description describes methods and apparatus for enabling data analysis in a network domain. The method and system are implemented at entry nodes, intermediate support nodes and exit nodes. The ingress node inserts marker tags into data packets of a particular data flow received at the ingress node. When a tagged data packet is received, the intermediate support node reports back to the ingress node or similar analysis node. When a data packet arrives at an egress node of a data flow in the network domain, the egress node reports to the ingress node or analysis node, and then removes the marker tag from the data packet before it is forwarded out of the network domain. Nodes in the network domain can signal among themselves to determine which nodes in the network domain support labeling and data analysis processes and systems such that ingress nodes of a data stream label data destined for egress nodes supporting the method and system grouping.

Abstract

A method implemented by a node of a network domain having a plurality of nodes, wherein the node acts as an entry node of the network domain for data flow. This approach allows data flow analysis across network domains. The method comprises: receiving a data packet belonging to a data flow at an ingress node of a network domain; determining whether the data packet is marked for analysis of the data flow; determining whether an egress node of the network domain of the data flow supports data packet marking; marking the data with a marking label packet, the marker tag indicating to support nodes in the network domain that the data packet is to be processed for data flow analysis; and forwarding the data packet towards an egress node of the network domain.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to providing network analytics in the network domain. In particular, embodiments relate to methods and systems implemented by nodes in a network domain that enable network analysis that enables correlation of data packets of data flows across domains. Background technique [0002] In order to understand the overall behavior of data traffic in the network domain, it is important to understand the characteristics of individual data traffic flows in the network. Characteristics of individual data traffic flows can contain information about individual data packets or metrics associated with a set of packets in each data flow. These metrics can include things such as average data packet size, data packet encapsulation type, delay between sending and receiving a data packet across network domains, variation in throughput (i.e., jitter) of a data flow across a network, bandwidth utilization of a data flow, The identificat...
