Embodiment Construction

[0024] As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention which may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.

[0025] Traditional body structures are formed from sheet metal stampings that are welded together to form the structure. This method can be costly and time consuming. In order to improve manufacturing efficiency, the present disclosure proposes a method of manufacturing an exoskeleton formed of elongated members and joints that can be inserted into each other and bonded by fasteners a...

Abstract

The present invention discloses an exoskeleton vehicle upper body structure. A vehicle body exoskeleton includes a plurality of nodes each defining a receptacle. A plurality of tubes has first and second end portions smaller than and tapering inwardly from a main portion. Each end portion is received in one of the receptacles. An adhesive is applied to the end portions to fill a gap defined between the receptacles and the end portions to bond the tubes to the receptacles.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a method of manufacturing an exoskeleton body structure for a vehicle. Background technique [0002] A body-on-frame vehicle has a body structure supported by a frame. The frame may include a pair of longitudinally extending beams or a one-piece monocoque body frame. Suspension components are attached to the frame to support the frame above the ground. The underbody of the body structure is bolted to the frame at selected locations. Body mounts are provided between the body structure and the frame to absorb vibrations. The body structure is formed by welding together a plurality of sheet metal stampings that are initially assembled as subassemblies and then assembled together to form the body-in-white structure. [0003] Forming body structures from multilayer stamped parts is a complex and time-consuming process. Stampings used in the process are product specific and basically cannot be used across multiple produ...
