Abstract

The invention discloses a method and device for deriving motion vector predictors based on priorities, which are used for motion compensation in video encoders or decoders. According to the method, one or more final motion vector predictors are derived using a priority based motion vector predictor derivation procedure. Select one from priority-based motion vector predictor lists for inter prediction mode, skip mode, or merge mode by based on reference data of one or two target reference pictures preceding current block reconstruction according to priority order or more first available motion vector predictors to derive one or more final motion vector predictors. Therefore, no information needs to be sent at the encoder side, nor information related to the one or more motion vector predictors need to be derived at the decoder side to identify the final motion vector predictor(s) in the video bitstream.
