Abstract

A conditioning system and method for providing cooling to a heat load may include an evaporative cooler disposed in a scavenging plenum having a precooler upstream of the evaporative cooler and an evaporative cooling recovery coil downstream of the unit. Outside air or purge air can be conditioned in the evaporative cooler so that the conditioned purge air can provide cooling to the cooling fluid circulating through the recovery coil. The reduced temperature cooling fluid may provide liquid cooling or air cooling to an enclosed space (eg, a data center) or to one or more devices that are enclosed or open to the atmosphere. Due to the design and placement of the precooler, evaporative cooler and recovery coil in the plenum, the system can operate in several modes. The precooler may be configured to circulate cooling fluid to condition purge air. The precooler fluid circuit can be coupled or decoupled from the process cooling fluid circuit.
