Problems solved by technology

For example, these traditional techniques and systems may involve posting to remote databases, which may make it difficult to maintain privacy
Traditional techniques and systems that support local storage require downloading the video and then opening the player app, which may also require manual entry of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), and is therefore frustrating and error-prone
Additionally, these traditional techniques are modal and thus require users to navigate away from the user interface used to create and edit VR video in order to share that content with other devices, which is also frustrating and inefficient

[0028] overview

[0029] Virtual reality (VR) video extends a user's ability to interact with the video over traditional two-dimensional video, such as to view different parts of a virtual reality scene output by rendering of the VR video. However, as previously mentioned, these expanded capabilities for interacting with VR video limit the ability of users to interact with each other in other ways, even when in the same room. Furthermore, legacy techniques that support sharing of VR video output by multiple VR devices can lead to incompatibility and are therefore generally avoided. Accordingly, VR video presents many challenges not encountered as part of collaborative viewing of two-dimensional video or other types of digital content.

[0030]For example, a VR video may be configured for output by a VR device configured with a headset (eg, an immersive head-mounted display) that blocks a full view of the outside world. Thus, while providing an immersive view of VR video, thi...

Abstract

Techniques and systems to support collaborative interaction as part of virtual reality video are described. In one example, a viewport is generated such that a reviewing user of a reviewing user device may view VR video viewed by a source user of a source user device. The viewport, for instance, may be configured as a border at least partially surrounding a portion of the VR video output by the reviewing VR device. In another instance, the viewport is configured to support output of thumbnails within an output of VR video by the reviewing VR device. Techniques and systems are also described tosupport communication of annotations between the source and reviewing VR devices. Techniques and systems are also described to support efficient distribution of VR video within a context of a contentediting application.

Description

Background technique [0001] Virtual reality (VR) video has recently emerged as a creative art form to expand the ability of users to interact with video, such as viewing different parts of a virtual reality scene output by rendering of VR video. However, the expanded capabilities available to interact with VR video limit the ability of users to interact with each other in other ways. Thus, the advantages of VR video in extended user interaction with VR video may limit and interfere with other interactions of the user "outside" that view, such as communicating with other users. [0002] As part of the process of creating a VR video, for example, creative professionals may wish to participate in a collaborative review to exchange feedback, eg to designate the inclusion and modification of specific objects, dialogue, and the like. However, traditional techniques for supporting collaborative review and feedback for traditional 2D videos face many challenges and are therefore not ...
