Embodiment Construction

[0044] Typically, a resistor ladder DAC is provided. The resistor ladder comprises a plurality of series connected resistive elements connected together in a circle or ring. Nodes or taps between each of the resistive elements provide input / output terminals for the resistor ladder. Multiple terminals are coupled to each node, each terminal being coupled to the node through a switch. The first end can be used to receive a first reference voltage. The second terminal can be used to receive the second reference voltage. The third terminal can serve as an output terminal for an analog voltage. In one embodiment, the resistor ladder analog output voltage is single-ended. In another embodiment, the resistor ladder analog output voltage is differential. A method to correct mismatched resistance values in the resistive element is provided. This mismatch induced error is removed by barrel shifting, data weighted averaging, or other mismatch error shaping techniques that shape o...

Abstract

A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) includes a plurality of resistive elements connected together in series to form a ring of resistive elements. A node is formed by each of the connections of adjacent resistive elements of the ring. Groups of parallel-connected switches are coupled to each node. A first switch of the group of switches is for selectively coupling a first power supply voltage terminal to the node. A second switch of the group of switches is for selectively coupling a second power supply voltage to the node. A third switch of the group of switches is for selectively coupling anoutput terminal to the node. A differential or single-ended analog output may be provided. Mismatch induced error is removed using a mismatch error shaping technique that shapes the errors outside a passband.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to electrical circuits and, more particularly, to resistor ladder digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with mismatch correction and methods of mismatch correction. Background technique [0002] One type of resistor ladder digital-to-analog converter (DAC) includes a plurality of resistors connected together in series between a first reference voltage terminal and a second reference voltage terminal. This type of DAC may also be called a Kelvin divider or a string DAC. An output terminal or output node in series with a switch is located at the connection between each resistor. A control terminal of each of the switches receives a bit of a digital value that will turn on one of the switches such that an analog output voltage corresponding to the digital value is provided. Each of the plurality of resistors is expected to have the same resistance value, but for example, process variations and temperature variation...
