Embodiment Construction

[0015] now refer to figure 1 , shows a schematic diagram of a spark-ignited internal combustion engine 10 having a pre-chamber ignition device (“pre-chamber device”) 12 . Engine 10 includes an engine housing 13 having an engine head 14 and an engine block 16 . Engine head 14 and engine block 16 , together with piston 18 , form combustion chamber 20 configured to receive air and possibly fuel via intake runners or ducts 22 . The intake conduit 22 may be coupled to a fuel supply conduit 23 configured to provide fuel to the combustion chamber 20 through a fuel inlet valve or fuel injector 24, although it is also contemplated that fuel may be introduced into a turbocharger (not shown) Example upstream of the compressor. Further, fuel supply 26 is fluidly coupled with fuel injector 24 .

[0016] The pre-chamber arrangement 12 has one or more ports 28 and may be supported within the engine 10 by the engine head 14 such that the ports 28 are positioned within the combustion chambe...

Abstract

A prechamber ignition device for a spark-ignited internal combustion engine has a prechamber in fluid communication with a main combustion chamber by way of a plurality of ports. An outer opening of each of the plurality of ports is formed in an exterior surface of a prechamber body and circumferentially offset from a corresponding inner opening formed in an interior surface of the prechamber body, the interior surface forming a prechamber wall having a taper that assists in maintaining velocity of a charge of air and fuel to displace a flame kernel from a spark gap in the prechamber such thatquenching of the flame kernel is prevented.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a pre-chamber ignition device for an internal combustion engine, and more particularly, to a pre-chamber ignition device configured to create and maintain a charge swirl of fuel and air in the pre-chamber. Background technique [0002] Internal combustion engines, including gasoline or natural gas spark ignition engines, diesel compression ignition engines, gas fueled engines, and other internal combustion engines generally operate by creating a controlled combustion reaction within cylinders that drive pistons to rotate a crankshaft. This basic technology has been used to operate engines using traditional fuels such as gasoline or diesel for more than a century. Emissions concerns, price and supply issues, among others, have led to interest in and utilization of less traditional fuels, especially natural gas. These fuels are typically used at higher stoichiometric air-fuel ratios or so-called "lean" fuel mix...
