Embodiment Construction

[0053] The invention is described with specific reference to soccer balls. However, as indicated above, known soccer balls come in variations and are constructed to suit various purposes. The scope of the invention includes all football and sporting articles for which sewing the panels together creates raised edges along the seams of the stitched panels which are stiff and located within the volume enclosed by the article .

[0054] figure 1 is an exploded view of a preferred embodiment of the outer layer of a soccer ball. This is the layer visible to the user. The outer layer preferably comprises three separate layers: an outer cover material 10, and a middle layer 12 of perforated material, and a third inner layer 14 comprising a fabric material. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the intermediate layer 12 is at least partially perforated to make it more flexible, and it works with another perforated portion of the finished structure to further increase the flex...

Abstract

An object for sports play, such as a soccer ball or a handball, is provided with perforated, interior panels disposed between an interior inflatable bladder and an outer covering which is stitched together from a plurality of individual panels. The stitching process produces raised portions surrounding the interior sides of the outer covering. These raised portions define recesses into which the perforated interior panels are disposed. The recess-filling panels overlie the ridges which are hard and whose hardness is counteracted by these preferably perforated panels. This provides a smooth surface against which the inflatable bladder rests. Additional flexure is also provided by perforating one or more of the layers in the outer covering. With particular reference to handball manufacture the interior panels comprise two layers, the outer one of which contains recesses containing shock absorbing gel type material.
