If some base stations send the same (correct) information, but one or more base stations send different information than the correct information, the combined result produced by the mobile station will not be as reliable as if all base stations sent the correct information

Embodiment Construction

[0016] image 3 The example in the figure illustrates that a plurality of base stations communicate with the mobile station 11 in the CDMA macro-diversity transmission mode. Specifically, with reference to base stations BTS3 and BTS4, when conventional CDMA synchronization control indicates that it is time to transmit CDMA data, if one of the base stations has not received all of its correct packet data, or if the packet data received by one of the base stations is within Corrupted during transmission over a packet-switched network, it is then impossible for the base station to send the same information as other base stations that have received all of their expected packet data in uncorrupted form. Therefore, in order to provide the mobile station with the best opportunity to receive the expected information, the base station (base station BTS3 in this embodiment) that has not received all of its correct packet data or has received corrupted packet data is prohibited from sendi...

Abstract

A plurality of base stations (BT3, BT4, 35) are operated in CDMA macrodiversity mode to communicate a message to a mobile station (11) via an air interface (13). If the message is successfully communicated to one of the base stations via a packet network (23), the base station communicates the message to the mobile station via the air interface using CDMA. Otherwise, the base station refrains from communicating any message to the mobile station.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to data transmission from a base station to a mobile telecommunication device using Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and more particularly to CDMA data transmission from a plurality of base stations operating in macrodiversity and connected to a packet switched network. Background technique [0002] The basic principle of conventional CDMA systems is so-called macrodiversity, in which several base transceiver stations (base stations) communicate with one mobile station simultaneously over the air interface. For example, Figure 1 illustrates that this technique is employed when a mobile station roams from one base station (ie, cell) to another during a conventional soft handover procedure. In the downlink, the mobile telecommunication device (or mobile station) 11 receives data from all base stations BTS1 and BTS2, while all base stations transmit data via the air interface 13 to the mobile station. The mobile station...
