Problems solved by technology

The disadvantage of this concept is that it is not possible to heat the charge air via the coolant after a cold start of the internal combustion engine, since after a cold start the coolant itself usually does not have the high temperature required to heat the charge air, especially in ambient when the temperature is low

Embodiment Construction

[0085] figure 1A first embodiment of a supercharged internal combustion engine 1 is schematically shown, which is equipped with an exhaust-gas turbocharger 5 comprising a variable turbine The geometry of the turbine 5 b and the compressors 4 , 5 a arranged in the intake system 2 . The hot exhaust gas expands in the turbine 5b and releases energy. The compressors 4 , 5 a compress charge air supplied to the cylinders through the intake system 2 and a charge air cooler 2 a provided downstream, thereby achieving supercharging of the internal combustion engine 1 . The internal combustion engine is a four-cylinder in-line engine, wherein the four cylinders are arranged along the longitudinal axis of the cylinder head, ie in a straight line.

[0086] The internal combustion engine 1 has a liquid cooling device 10 which includes a cooling circuit 10 a conducting a coolant.

[0087] The internal combustion engine 1 is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation device 6 , here a low-...

Abstract

The invention provides a supercharged internal combustion engine and a method of operating the same, and relates to a supercharged internal combustion engine (1). The supercharged internal combustionengine comprises a liquid cooling device (10) comprising a coolant-conducting cooling circuit (10a); an intake system (2) for supplying charge air; an exhaust gas discharge system (3) for dischargingexhaust gas; at least one compressor (4) provided for compressing charge air in the intake system (2) and comprising at least one impeller mounted on a rotatable shaft in the compressor housing and equipped with impeller blades; an exhaust gas recirculation device (6) comprising a recirculation line (6a) leading into the intake system (2) so as to form a first junction point (6') upstream of the at least one compressor wheel; and a heat exchanger (7) arranged upstream of the first junction point (6') in the intake system (2) and incorporated into the cooling circuit (10a) for transferring heatbetween the charge air and the coolant. The aim of the invention is to provide an internal combustion engine of the above type, by means of which the formation of condensates in the intake system (2)can be counteracted. This is achieved by an internal combustion engine, characterized in that an electrically operated heating device (11) is arranged in the cooling circuit (10a) upstream of the heat exchanger (7).
