Abstract

A method is disclosed for services that perform serial service chains in parallel on packets using multicast-based service insertion. In an embodiment, the method includes identifying a plurality of services to apply to the packet of the data flow, and determining a plurality of servers configured to provide the plurality of services for the data flow. The plurality of servers are grouped into a plurality of multicast groups; wherein the multicast groups of the plurality of multicast groups are from the first multicast group including the largest number of servers to the last multicast group including the smallest number of servers are sorted sequentially. When a grouping of a data stream is detected, it is stored in a memory, and multicasted to a first multicast group of a plurality of multicast groups, so that the services of the servers included in the first multicast group are parallelized applied to this group. Once multiple responses are received from the servers belonging to the first multicast group, the multiple responses are used to determine whether the service processing of the packet is complete. In response to determining that service processing of the packet is complete, the packet is handled according to the plurality of responses without multicasting the packet to any other of the plurality of multicast groups.
