Abstract

A membrane filter assembly configured to treat a liquid contained in a water tank at ambient pressure is disclosed. The assembly may have a header and a membrane bundle containing a plurality of substantially vertical hollow fiber membranes, wherein a lower end of each hollow fiber membrane is secured in the header. The assembly may also have a gasification device adapted to periodically generate air bubbles and configured to release the air bubbles within the membrane bundle. The assembly may also have an enclosure substantially surrounding the membrane bundle by extending from a lower region to an upper region of the membrane bundle, and the enclosure is configured to retain the liquid introduced into the enclosure so that the liquid surrounds the membrane bundle. Each bubble has a cross-sectional area corresponding to a cross-sectional area of the enclosure so that the cross-sectional area of the bubble occupies substantially the entire cross-sectional area of the enclosure when the bubble flows along the membrane bundle.
