Embodiment Construction

[0026] Reference will now be made in detail to the representative embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that the following description is not intended to limit the embodiments to one preferred embodiment. On the contrary, it is intended to cover alternatives, modifications and equivalents, which may be included within the spirit and scope of the described embodiments as defined by the appended claims.

[0027] The following disclosure relates to touchpads and related touch-based input devices for computers such as laptops, notebooks, tablets, and related devices and accessories. Although some trackpads implement capacitive touch sensors and force sensors, they may not be as intuitive and comfortable to use if they do not provide feedback to the user when the user applies a touch or downward force. Accordingly, conventional trackpads have been accompanied by clickable tactile buttons or electronic tactile feedback systems configured to v...

Abstract

The invention discloses a parallel motion trackpad. The invention discloses an input device, including a touch plate having a central axis and a top surface with three outer points evenly spaced away from the central axis. A touch sensor is used to detect a user touch on the top surface at the first outer point, and a support mechanism supports the touch plate and is configured to translate the touch plate at the second and third outer points upon application of the user touch and translation of the touch plate at the first outer point. Translation of the three outer points is substantially equal along the central axis.

Description

technical field [0001] The implementations generally relate to input devices for computers. More specifically, this embodiment relates to touchpad input device support and motion control. Background technique [0002] There are currently many types of input devices for performing input operations in electronic devices. These operations generally correspond to moving the cursor and making selections on the display. Such input devices may include, by way of example, buttons, switches, keyboards, mice, trackballs, touchpads, joysticks, touchscreens, and the like. Each of these devices has advantages and disadvantages to consider when designing a consumer electronic device. In handheld computing devices, input devices are typically selected from buttons and switches. Buttons and switches are often mechanical in nature and provide limited control over moving a cursor (or other selector) and making selections. For example, they are often dedicated to moving a cursor in a part...
