The invention relates to a navigation system with a high-definition mapping mechanism and a method of operating the same. A navigation system includes communication circuitry configured to send a request for initial mapping of an area and receive sensor data packets for the area from a map generation resource; a control circuit, coupled to the communication circuit, configured to: compile a high definition map from the sensor data packets; and publishing the high definition map as metric-based content to a navigation exchange mechanism.
