Abstract

The invention relates to a method for training neuromuscular function using a gait trainer comprising a motor, a weight sensor and a cable, and a gait trainer. The method may include determining an action applied by the motor to the cable balancing weight, and measuring, with the weight sensor, an action applied by a patient to the cable actual weight, wherein the driving direction of the motor is determined based on comparing the balancing weight to a measurement of the actual weight applied to the cable by the patient. The gait trainer may include a lifting system having a rotatable cable drum and a cable for winding or unwinding the cable around the rotatable cable drum according to a drive direction set based on comparing a balancing weight to a measured weight actually applied to the cable by a patient. The gait trainer may further include a motor adapted to axially engage the rotatable cable drum and to drive the rotatable cable drum in a drive direction. The gait trainer may also include a weight sensor, a control unit, a processor, and a motor controller. The lifting system can be freely suspended through a weight sensor.
