Abstract

A controller (122, 910 / 920) for interventional program optimization includes a processor (12210, 910) and a memory (12220, 920) that stores instructions. When executed by the processor, the instructions cause the controller (12210, 910) to implement a process that includes, for each of a plurality of candidate types of an interventional procedure for the anatomical structure, identifying (S210) an anatomical characteristic from a pre-interventional image of the anatomical structure, and comparing (S220) the anatomical characteristics with tool characteristics of candidate tools used in each of the candidate types. The process further includes generating (S240) a feasibility report for each of the candidate types based on the identification and the comparison. Each feasibility report includes a feasibility level for each of the candidate types. The process further comprises selecting (S260) an optimized intervention program type among the candidate types based on the feasibility report. The interventional procedure is performed on the anatomical structure using the optimized interventional procedure type based on the selection (S260).

Background [0001] Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in the world today. Some countries have implemented lung cancer screening programs to detect lung cancer at an early stage. Several treatment options are available for early-stage lung cancer and improve 5-year survival. For patients suspected of having lung cancer, a diagnosis of suspicious lung tissue must be obtained, whether through screening or other means. Lung tissue can be obtained through several types of interventional procedures, including through intrabronchial biopsy, transthoracic biopsy, or surgical biopsy. Endobronchial biopsy is the preferred type of biopsy to obtain a sample of lung tissue for diagnosis because of the low complication rate. However, for peripherally located lung cancer nodules, the diagnostic rate of endobronchial biopsy may be as low as 30%.
