[0021] 1 Overview

[0022] Although efficient multistage power amplifiers are described in detail with reference to transceivers used in wireless communication devices, in any system where both high and low power amplification is desired and at low power amplification operating points are not equal to This highly efficient multistage power amplifier can be used in any system that amplifies 50% of the high level power operating point. Moreover, it is possible to implement a highly efficient multi-stage power amplifier with software, hardware, or a combination of software and hardware. In at least one embodiment, selected portions of a high-efficiency multi-stage power amplifier are implemented in hardware and software. The hardware part of the present invention can be implemented using dedicated hardware logic. Software portions can be stored in memory and executed by a suitable instruction execution system (microprocessor). A hardware implementation of an efficient multista...

Abstract

A high efficiency, multiple power output power amplifier uses a pair of amplifiers (214, 216) having similar characteristics coupled to a pair of radio frequency RF couplers (204, 222). When both amplifiers (214, 216) are operating, the power output (RF OUTPUT) is the sum of the outputs of the two amplifiers (214, 216). When lower power operation is desired, one of the amplifiers (214, 216) is turned off and a high impedance is presented to the isolated port of the output RF coupler (222), thereby ensuring that all of the power output (RF OUTPUT) of the remaining power amplifier is available for output.
