[0039] A number of parameters and the signals representing these parameters are discussed below. In general, no distinction is made between these parameters and the signals representing them, since it is easy for a person skilled in the art to convert between them. Therefore, the actual value of the parameter and the signal representing it are denoted by the same notation.

[0040] Throughout this document, all relationships with respect to speed and related parameters are discussed primarily in terms of slip. However, anyone skilled in the art understands that these relationships are equally valid for parameters that can be directly derived from slip, such as the rotational speed of an asynchronous motor. Since the grid frequency is known, there is a unique relationship between the slip rate and the rotational speed, and all relationships involving the slip rate can be changed to those involving the rotational speed. Such changes should be understood as being included in th...

Abstract

The present invention discloses devices and methods for improved starting and stopping of rotary motors. A rotary electrical machine is supplied with a voltage from a voltage supply (10). The magnitude of a phase current is measured. The measured cuurent value (IM) and applied voltage (U) is compared with what is expected for a predetermined target slip (ST), by means of a relation between phase current, applied voltage and slip. The comparison gives a discrepancy value, which is used to create a regulation signal (DeltaU) to the voltage supply (10). To start and stop the machine, the target slip is increased and decreased, respectively, in a predetermined manner. The means for regulation may be provided as a separate add-on unit to existing soft starter equipment.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to apparatus and methods for speed regulation of rotating electric machines. In particular, the invention relates to soft starters / brakes for asynchronous rotating electrical machines. Background technique [0002] Asynchronous motors are used today in a wide variety of applications. Asynchronous motors have many advantages. Usually its structure is simple, the work is very safe, and the service life is long. However, starting and braking of asynchronous motors requires consideration of other factors. Immediately applying full voltage causes a very large current spike, which in turn causes a voltage drop. For large motors, especially when used in connection with weak grids, this voltage drop can cause large disturbances in the grid. Therefore, it is often required to start the motor slowly, at least for larger motors. In large and complex applications, asynchronous motors are sometimes equipped with speed r...
