Abstract

A thermal printer including a thermally conductive sacrificial element placed between a thermal print head and a web. The sacrificial element is usually clamped with tension to prevent the web from coming into direct contact with the thermal printhead. Sacrificial elements can take one of many different forms, including fixed strips or belts, and rotatable continuous belts that cycle slowly during printing to wear down their surfaces evenly, or Moebius loops that can further Evenly distributes wear on both surfaces of the belt. By providing a sacrificial element between the printhead and the web, printhead wear and exposure is reduced, thereby extending printhead life.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of the following US Provisional Applications: Serial No. 60 / 264,858, filed January 29, 2001, and Serial No. 60 / 266,496, filed February 5, 2001. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates generally to thermal printers and, more particularly, to thermal printers using a sacrificial element positioned between the printhead and the roll of paper used for printing to reduce wear on the printhead during printing. As used in this application, the term "thermal printer" refers to both thermal transfer printers and direct thermal printers. Background of the invention [0004] Direct thermal printers are well known in the art. In these printers, a roll of paper or film with a heat-sensitive coating is inserted between the drive drum roller and a thermal printhead, on which there is an array of selectively charged heating cells. To print on the web, electrical pulses are applied to selected familie...
