Problems solved by technology

[0008] However, when there are typically many sensors that need to be interrogated in small time frames, such as fractions of a second, it may be difficult or impossible to continuously and reliably obtain accurate information on each variable that needs to be measured. The sensor parameter value of

[0024] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0025] The present invention is a system and method for time constrained retrieval of sensor data from multiple sensors. A set of sensors is coupled to a device that has various variable parameters that need to be detected at intervals of a specified time frame. Each sensor can be configured to detect a parameter. Sensing a parameter includes obtaining and providing a corresponding parameter value, which may be done in response to a request from the sensor monitoring system. When the time interval is relatively short, it is difficult to obtain and provide a parameter value for each parameter of each device, especially if there are other tasks that need to be completed within the time interval.

[0026] If among these parameters, certain parameters (and their parameter values) are relatively stable during the time interval, that is, a parameter value has a slow rate of change, according to the present invention, the se...

Abstract

A system and method for time-constrained sensor data retrieval comprising a sensor monitoring system (150) coupled to a set of sensors (102-110), wherein each sensor is coupled to a device (101-109) , the device has a variety of variable parameters that need to be detected at intervals within a specific time frame. The sensor monitoring system (150) selectively requests parameter values from only a subset of the sensors during one or more time intervals when at least some of the parameter values are relatively stable during the time interval. However, preferably for each parameter, within the time frame value, one parameter value of each parameter is taken at least once, irrespective of from which time interval the parameter value is obtained.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for retrieving data from sensors. In particular, it relates to systems and methods for selectively or time-constrained collection of data from sensors. [0002] Related cross-patent applications [0003] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application 60 / 161,946, filed October 28, 1999, entitled Data Retrieval System. Background of the invention [0004] Sensors are used in a large variety of systems and for a variety of purposes. Generally, an indication of the current state or value of a specified parameter is provided. Therefore, there are various types of sensors for detecting different types of parameters. For example, a sensor can detect temperature, pressure, force, voltage or current values, sound level, humidity, position or motion. [0005] In a typical application, sensors are used to detect a state of a multi-state device, or to provid...
