Embodiment Construction

[0038] FIG. 1 illustrates a job 100 being passed to a scheduling framework 108 . The scheduling framework 108 has entries to a scheduling policy A 102 , a scheduling policy B 104 and a scheduling policy C 106 . Data processing resources 110 , 112 and 114 are connected to a central database 116 which is connected to scheduling framework 108 .

[0039] For example, when a job 100 with job requirements enters the scheduling framework 108, the scheduler performs a query to identify at least one of the data processing resources 110, 112, and 114 whose system specifications match the job requirements . Data processing resources 110, 112, and 114 send their respective system specifications to central database 116, either at regular intervals or on demand (Push or Pull). The required system specifications are then stored to the central database 116 and submitted to the scheduling framework 108 upon query.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a scheduling system for scheduling a job, the job having at least one job requirement and being indicative of a scheduling policy of at least first and second scheduling policies, the method comprising the steps of: (a) performing a query in order to identify data processing resources matching the at least one job requirement and obtaining input data for the selected scheduling policy; and (b) selecting one of the matching resources by means of the selected scheduling policy on the basis of the input data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of distributed computing in which computing power is provided on demand by a grid that combines the resources and capabilities of multiple data processing devices. Background technique [0002] Distributed computing is based on the combination of a large number of computers, which form a so-called grid and thus provide enormous computing and storage capabilities comparable to supercomputers. A computationally intensive job requiring long processing times can be efficiently partitioned and distributed to multiple computers in the grid. Since each computer then processes a portion of the computationally intensive job simultaneously, the processing time for the overall job will be reduced by a certain factor. In general, processing time will decrease as the number of computers in the grid increases. [0003] By combining computing resources in a grid, extremely time-consuming and resource-hungry computing jobs,...
