Problems solved by technology

Although the dependence on each flow state and each flow processing is eliminated, and thus the scalability problem is alleviated to a certain extent, since the business flow is managed and governed based on hop by hop (policed), thus DiffServ techniques are typically not deterministic

Embodiment Construction

[0012] refer to figure 1 , shows an exemplary communication network 10, such as a communication network based on a connectionless packet switching protocol. As an example, network 10 may operate according to the Internet Protocol ("IP") suite. The network 10 has ingress nodes A and B, denoted 12 and 14 respectively, from which traffic flows can be forwarded to egress nodes I and J of the network, denoted 16 and 14 respectively. 18 said. Said ingress nodes A and B may eg be edge routers, which may also be the case for egress nodes I and J. One or more intermediate nodes denoted 20, 24, 26, 28 and 30 respectively may be provided within the network 10 between any pairing selected from one of the incoming nodes A and B and one of the outgoing nodes I and J C, D, E, F, G, and H. The intermediate nodes C, D, E, F, G and H may eg be routers or other similar network entities.

Abstract

A method of forwarding traffic in a connectionless communications network from a source location to a destination location is disclosed. The traffic is associated with a predetermined category of transmission service. The method involves assigning a principal path to the traffic. The principal path operatively connects the source and destination locations. The principal path is determined on the basis that transmission of the traffic from the source location to the destination location does not exceed a specified maximum delay for transmission. An alternate path is also assigned to the traffic. The alternate path is selected on the basis that the alternate path does not exceed a specified maximum delay for involving the alternate path in order to forward the traffic along the alternate path in the event the principal path is unavailable for forwarding the traffic.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of communication networks, and in particular to a method and arrangement for providing a transmission service of a predetermined type in such a network. For example, the present invention may be used to provide an end-to-end network traffic path following a predetermined type of transport service in a communication network associated with a connectionless routing protocol for which network topology information is periodically Assigned to its network entities, said predetermined type of transport service is generally referred to in the art as Quality of Service (QoS). As an example, the communication network described above may be a network operating according to the Internet Protocol (IP) suite. Background technique [0002] Various attempts have been made in the field of communication networks to provide techniques or mechanisms for differentiated services in connectionless routing protocols, ie, t...
