Embodiment Construction

[0025] The word "exemplary" means "serving as an example, instance, or illustration." Embodiments or designs described herein as "exemplary" are not necessarily to be construed as preferred or advantageous over other embodiments or designs.

[0026] The pilot and data transmission schemes described herein can be used in different multi-antenna communication systems and utilize different multi-carrier modulation techniques. For clarity, these transmission schemes are described specifically for multiple antenna systems using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).

[0027] Figure 1A An OFDM subband structure 100 that may be used in a multi-antenna communication system is shown. The system has a total system bandwidth of W MHz, which is divided into N orthogonal sub-bands using OFDM. In a typical OFDM system, only M of the N total sub-bands are used for pilot and data transmission, where M

Abstract

A pilot and data transmission scheme for a multi-antenna communication system using multi-carrier modulation is provided. Sub-band multiplexing is used to avoid interference caused by simultaneous transmission of multiple signals from multiple antennas. The M available subbands are initially arranged to form a plurality of subband groups, each group comprising a different subset of the available subbands. Each of the T transmit antennas is then assigned one or possibly more subband groups for pilot transmission, and typically one subband group for data transmission. Pilot and data may then be transmitted from each antenna for pilot and data transmission on the sub-bands assigned to that antenna. For each transmit antenna, the transmit power for each allocated sub-band may be adjusted higher so that the entire total transmit power available to that antenna is used for transmission. Pilot and / or data may be transmitted simultaneously from all T antennas on all available sub-bands without causing mutual interference.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to data communications, and more particularly to pilot and data transmission schemes for multi-antenna communication systems using multi-carrier modulation. Background technique [0002] A multi-antenna communication system employs multiple (T) transmit antennas and one or more (R) receive antennas for pilot and data transmission. T transmit antennas may be used to increase throughput by transmitting independent data streams from these antennas. The T transmit antennas may also be used to improve reliability by redundantly transmitting a single data stream from these antennas. [0003] In a multi-antenna communication system, it may be necessary to estimate the channel gain between T transmit antennas and R receive antennas. Channel estimation may be required to determine a particular pattern to use for data transmissions, to process received data transmissions, and so on. Channel estimation is typically perfo...
