Data cartridge handling, recording and playback devices are also referred to as loading devices. The loading device 30 takes a standard size and shape and in one embodiment conforms to the 2U standard size form factor for rack mounting electronic and computer components. The loading device to which the present invention relates is scalable to other sizes, including conforming to a 1U form factor or a 4U form factor. The loading device 30 includes a tape record and playback drive 32 , two data cartridge storage bins 34 and 36 and an automatic data cartridge shuttle 38 .
