[0055] Figure 3a and 3b Some basic principles used in 3D image display devices are described. exist Figure 3a In , a Fresnel reflector 32 is used to provide a relatively large virtual image 30 for a smaller display panel 31 . exist Figure 3b In , a Fresnel lens 37 is used to provide a relatively large virtual image 35 for a relatively small display panel 36 . A virtual image 30 or 35 appears in the air in front of the lens. The viewer can focus on this image 30 or 35, thereby observing that the image 30 or 35 is "floating" in the air.

Abstract

An optical path length adjuster enables electro-optical control of a physical path length between two optical elements, suitable for use in the adjustment of an optical path length within three dimensional display devices that generate a virtual image within a defined imaging volume. The adjuster varies an optical path length between an input optical path and an output optical path and includes: afirst polarisation switch for selecting a polarisation state for an input beam on the input optical path; first and second beam splitters having at least two possible optical paths of different lengths therebetween, for passing the input beam along a selected one of said at least two possible optical paths according to the selected polarisation state of the input beam and for providing an outputbeam of light, on said optical output path, that has travelled along the selected optical path.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to methods and devices for adjusting the optical path length between two optical elements. In particular, but not exclusively, the invention relates to the adjustment of optical path lengths in three-dimensional display devices that produce virtual images within a defined imaging volume. Background technique [0002] Three-dimensional images can be generated in several ways. For example, in a stereoscopic display, two images that can only be observed by each eye of the viewer are displayed simultaneously or time-divisionally. These images are selected by means of special glasses or goggles worn by the viewer. In the former case, the glasses may be equipped with polarizer lenses. In the latter case, the glasses may be equipped with electronically controlled shutters. These types of displays are relatively simple to construct and have very low data rates. However, it is inconvenient to use specialized viewing glasses, and the l...
