Abstract

The invention provides a medical reagent dispensing system and a surgical instrument using the medical reagent dispensing system. The dispensing system may be configured for use with a surgical cutting/stapling instrument configured for cutting and stapling tissue. The dispensing system may include: at least one storage container configured to store at least one component of the medical agent and a pump in communication with the storage container; a delivery tube in communication with the pump configured to for containing a quantity of medical reagent from the storage container; and at least one reagent tube in communication with the delivery tube, the reagent tube configured for dispensing with a staple cartridge or anvil of the surgical instrument for dispensing therethrough At least one reagent port of the medical reagent communicates.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to surgical instruments. More particularly, the present invention relates to the delivery and application of medical agents in connection with the use of surgical instruments to promote closure and healing of cut and stapled tissue. Background technique [0002] Conventional surgical staplers that can be used to simultaneously make an incision in tissue and apply suture to opposite sides of the incision are known in the art. Such instruments typically include a pair of cooperating jaw members that are capable of passing through a cannula channel when used in endoscopic or laparoscopic applications. One of the jaw members typically houses a staple cartridge having at least two laterally spaced rows of staples. The other jaw member defines an anvil having staple-forming slots correspondingly aligned with the rows of staples in the staple cartridge. Such a stapling instrument may also include a plurality of recip...
