Abstract

A display comprises a self-luminous display element (10) which transmits a light when it displays no image and a display element (40) which is formed on the display element (10) and capable of switching between a light-transmitting state and an opaque state. The display displays a certain image by superimposing an image displayed by the display element (10) on another image displayed by the display element (40). With a display having such a structure, a good black display can be attained even when the outside light is bright. A full color display with good contrast can be also realized by such a display. Furthermore, by having a black display on the entire display element (40), the information on the display screen of the display element (10) is not seen through the display screen of the display element (40). Consequently, it is possible to protect privacy and security of the displayed information.
