In deduplication embodiments, one instance of each extent is backed-up for extents included in multiple backup objects or at multiple locations within the same backup object. Restoration of data from sequential-access media (such as magnetic tape) requires time to mount cartridges and position the device reader to the data extents. Sequential-access media comprises storage where data locations must be accessed in a sequential manner. Further, backup data can become non-contiguous because the files backed-up may be defragmented and because the same data presented in different backup objects as of different points-in-time are stored non-contiguously.
