AI Technical Summary

Benefits of technology

The present invention is an interactive, electronic method for creating annotated visual data by displaying video, stills, or live imagery and annotating it with text, symbols, and other information. This method allows users to create a record of the visual data, which can be shared with others. The shared data can include a listing of the annotated records, which users can access and interact with to play back the video or add new annotations. Users can also access an index to search and view the annotated data. This invention allows for easy sharing and access to user-perspectives on video or images.

Problems solved by technology

However, little attention has so far been paid to the larger need—and opportunity—of co-located or distributed user communities to author and share personal interpretations of multimedia content by creating, annotating, storing, and sharing persistent records of “point-of-view” visual media traversals.

Embodiment Construction

[0028]Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail, with reference to the drawings. For present purposes, visual data generally includes any manner of digital image data, including motion video, still imagery, simulated or animated imagery, panoramic imagery, and live imagery, all with or without an accompanying audio channel.

A. Authoring

[0029]FIG. 1 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for authoring annotated, “point-of-view” traversals of visual data in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2A illustrates a graphical user interface for defining point-of-view traversals in accordance with a rectangular embodiment. Broadly, the authoring process consists of interactively selecting from the visual data a set of cropped space and time selections, and marking these in the workspace. We refer to this interactive selection herein as traversal.

Abstract

A method of sharing user perspectives on visual data includes publishing an interactive abstract map in which one or more data markers are plotted, wherein each of the one or more data markers represents a traversal record comprising a set of cropped space selections and time selections from said visual data, receiving a first signal indicating an interactive selection of one of the one or more data markers, and playing back a traversal record corresponding to the one of the one or more data markers, responsive to the receiving.

Description

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS[0001]This application is a continuation of co-pending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10 / 331,775, filed Dec. 30, 2002, which is herein incorporated by reference in its entirety.FIELD OF INVENTION[0002]This invention relates to electronic methods and systems for interactive authoring, sharing and analysis of digital video content.BACKGROUND ART[0003]Various systems have been described and designed for capture and interactive navigation of panoramic digital imagery. For example, see “FlyCam: Practical Panoramic Video,” Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, vol. III, pp. 1419-1422 (August 2000); U.S. Pat. No. 6,285,365, “Icon-Referenced Panoramic Image Display,” Nalwa; and U.S. Pat. No. 6,121,966, “Navigable Viewing System,” Teodosio et al.[0004]Separately, systems also exist for annotating and sharing traditional video “clips” or excerpts. See, e.g., “VideoNoter: A Tool for Exploratory Video Analysis,” Roschelle, ...
