Using Bluetooth to establish ad-hoc connections between non-Bluetooth wireless communication modules

Using Bluetooth to provide the network management functions such as device discovery, service discovery, security negotiation, and connection establishment. Upon a Bluetooth connection being established between the Bluetooth-enabled devices an IP channel availability query is made. This is accomplished by using information request signals from the Bluetooth L2CAP protocol layer. If an IP channel is available on both the devices and the communication modules using that IP channel are compatible the devices will then establish a secondary Internet Protocol (IP) based data channel between them.

Method for determining DFS channel availability in a wireless LAN

A LAN has a wireless portion which includes access points and wireless communications devices and a wired portion which includes such things as routers, servers, and a PBX. The LAN operates in a radio frequency band where certain channels (DFS channels) are shared with a signal that is of higher priority than the communications signals transmitted and received by the access point and the wireless communications devices. If a higher priority signal is sensed on a particular channel of the wireless medium by a master device, it is necessary for all of the slave devices communicating on this channel to stop transmitting on that channel within a short period of time. The wireless communications devices are mobile and can be easily transported around in space or roam during a communications session. While roaming during a communications session, it is likely that the communications device will move out of range of an access point with which it is currently associated and possibly cause the session to end prematurely, and so it is important that a handoff procedure operates so that a communications session is continuous as the communications device roams from access point to access point. By setting and maintaining a timer dedicated to each available DFS channel, it is possible to ensure that the communications sessions is not interrupted during the roaming process in an environment were certain channels are shared with a higher priority signal.

An object-oriented system for managing multiple media types in a communication center environment has a multimedia queuing system, a processor for processing events in the queue, an interaction server for selecting media type or event types, a resource manager for reporting availability of a resource access point, and a data store for storing client information about media types available to the client and historical information about success of past use of those media types. In a preferred application, the system processes and routes incoming events of known media type to access points defined as systems or agents based in part on media channel availability of the access point, and wherein the system selects a media channel or channels for certain events in queue that are not pre-dedicated as specific media type events but are generated outbound or internal proactive contact events. For proactive contact events, the system automatically selects a media channel for each event based on a combination of set preferences and predictions based on historical channel information relating to success channel connections to that client.

System and method employing algorithms and protocols for optimizing carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols in wireless networks

A system and method for achieving enhanced CSMA / CA which improves channel availability and quality of service (QoS) in a wireless communications network. The system and method establish channels to enable communication between nodes in a communication network, based on the relationship between the average time length of message data packets and the time lengths of the request to send and clear to send messages. A node of the communication network places a data packet at a location in a queue for retransmission based on a type of information contained in the data packet if the destination node for which the data packet is intended is unable to receive the data packet. The location in the queue is indicative of a duration of time that the node will delay before attempting to resend the data packet to the destination node.

Method and devices for error tolerant data transmission, wherein retransmission of erroneous data is performed up to the point where the remaining number of errors is acceptable

A method and an apparatus for transmitting error-tolerant data is disclosed employing the ARQ technique, wherein the retransmission of erroneous data is performed up to the point where the remaining amount of errors is acceptable (for instance because the erorrs will not be perceived by the recipient of the information, which can be a person or a higher level protocol with additional error correction capabilities). The number of data blocks (RLC) detected as erroneous is employed to define a reliability measure (RM) and a request for retransmission of the erroneous data blocks is performed until a desired reliability threshold (RT) is reached. An additional threshold with a higher value than the first one can be employed to request for optional retransmission when the reliability measure (RM) is between the first and the second threshold. The retransmission will be performed only if further conditions such as channel availability are met.

Channel allocation in protected service areas

In described embodiments, a channel allocation system, such as a white space (WS) channel allocation system, employs a method to populate a WS database with channel availability information for areas with protected or otherwise registered service user information server. Communication characteristics of incumbent service providers licensed or otherwise registered to operate within certain frequency spectrum are plotted over a geographic area. The channel allocation system then divides the area into tiles, and determines whether each tile can be characterized for channel availability and, for those tiles that are uncharacterized, further divides the tiles into tiles of finer resolution. Based on information in the WS database, availability of channels in areas is pre-computed, and then an iterative search of areas with successively finer resolution identifies white space channels that might be included in the channel list in response to a query from a unlicensed or unregistered user.

Harnessing predictive models of durations of channel availability for enhanced opportunistic allocation of radio spectrum

A proactive adaptive radio methodology for the opportunistic allocation of radio spectrum is described. The methods can be used to allocate radio spectrum resources by employing machine learning to learn models, via accruing data over time, that have the ability to predict the context-sensitive durations of the availability of channels. The predictive models are combined with decision-theoretic cost-benefit analyses to minimize disruptions of service or quality that can be associated with reactive allocation policies. Rather than reacting to losses of channel, the proactive policies seek switches in advance of the loss of a channel. Beyond determining durations of availability for one or more frequency bands statistical machine learning also be employed to generate price predictions in order to facilitate a sale or rental of the available frequencies, and these predictions can be employed in the switching analyses The methods can be employed in non-cooperating distributed models of allocation, in centralized allocation approaches, and in hybrid spectrum allocation scenarios.

Method for accessing 802.11 wireless network channel under centralized control

The invention relates to a method for accessing an 802.11 wireless network channel under centralized control. On the premise of retaining a competitive mechanism, the method changes a random backoff channel accessing mode into a wireless controller (AP, access point)-based centralized control mode, thus optimizing the following problems in the channel accessing process: (1) the waiting time for random backoff of a station (STA) is not necessary and different inter-frame space (IFS) durations are uniformly replaced by a short inter-frame space (SIFS) duration, thus reducing time delay of frame transmission, improving the use ratio of a channel and greatly increasing the throughput of a system; (3) when multiple stations compete for channels simultaneously, the occurrence of collision is avoided, the accessing time delay of the stations is reduced, and the packet loss rates of the stations are reduced; and (4) stations do not use channel availability assessment (CAA), thus reducing energy consumption of the stations.

Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication at an AP. A station (STA) serving as a soft access point (SAP) in master mode may be configured to support communication over two radar channels (e.g., a primary and secondary channel) simultaneously.
