A plunger (30) for an IOL injector device includes a shaft (37) with a distal tip (32) and a compressible sleeve (40) positioned about the shaft with the tip extending forwardly of the sleeve. In a first stage of IOL (12) advancement through the injector device, the plunger tip engages and pushes the IOL through a first section (14a) of the injector body (14). In a second stage of IOL advancement, the sleeve enters the narrowing section (14b) of the injector body toward the open tip (18) thereof with the IOL and sleeve both undergoing compression. The sleeve compresses and lengthens in a forward direction ultimately enveloping the plunger distal tip. Viscoelastic applied inside the injector accumulates between the leading edge of the compressed sleeve and the compressed IOL thereby creating hydraulic pressure which pushes the compressed IOL through the remainder of the injector body and out the open distal tip thereof.

Modular Intraocular Lens Injector Device

An intraocular lens (IOL) injection device is modularized to enable cleaning of internal components after surgery. The device includes first and second housing modules. These modules collectively define a passageway along which an injector rod moves between a retracted position and an extended position. The first module is further configured to accommodate a lens cartridge module. The cartridge module has disposed therein an IOL, in alignment with the passageway. Thus as the rod moves from the retracted position to the extended position, a front portion of the rod that is substantially surrounded by the first module in the retracted position moves into the cartridge module and displaces the IOL. This causes the front portion of the rod to accumulate on it viscoelastic substances. The first module, though, is configured to detach from the second module, to thereby expose the front portion of the rod in the retracted position for cleaning.

Method for producing therapeutic corneal endothelial substitute cell sphere

The problem of the present invention is to provide a method of efficiently producing therapeutic alternative corneal endothelial cells, particularly, a method capable of stably producing them in a condition suitable for intraocular transplantation (in the anterior chamber) in a large amount. Furthermore, the present invention aims to provide a composition for transplantation, which is preferable for intraocular administration, particularly, into the anterior chamber. A therapeutic alternative corneal endothelial cell sphere can be produced by culturing stem cells in suspension in a differentiation induction medium containing a GSK3 inhibitor, retinoic acid and a ROCK inhibitor. Addition of a viscoelastic substance during intraocular (into the anterior chamber) transplantation of the sphere or cultured corneal endothelial cells dispersed into single cells can increase the number of adherent cells after transplantation.

Process and device for determining the surface friction coefficients of bodies

The present invention relates to a process and device for determining the surface friction coefficients of bodies, in particular of catheters. In the invented process, the to-be-examined catheter (1) is pulled with a defined velocity through a gel-like viscoelastic substance (2) and the frictional force required therefor is measured. A defined pressure is applied to this viscoelastic substance in such a manner that a defined surface normal force acts on the catheter surface. By applying a given, defined pressure on the substance, the surface pressure on each area element of the catheter surface is precisely given and can be held constant. By holding the area to which pressure is applied constant, the entire acting normal force can also be held constant and the friction coefficient can be determined for any catheter diameter and for any catheter consistency. Determination of the friction coefficient is reproducible and only depends on the surface friction.
