Techniques for ultrahigh density writing on an erasable magnetic medium include using a micromachined mechanism having two probes for writing to the medium. Use of the two probe embodiment eliminates the need to change the magnetic orientation of the probe. In another embodiment, a single probe is provided which is heated to the vicinity of its Curie temperature to enable the magnetic orientation of the probe to be switched. The probe may be heated to its Curie temperature through the use of a heating element or a focused laser. In another embodiment of the present invention, either the magnetic orientation of the probe or the magnetic orientation of the medium may be switched through the combination of a static magnetic field, a radio frequency magnetic field and, under certain circumstances, the magnetic field of the probe. In all cases, the writing techniques enable information to be written to a magnetic medium in a manner which enables the information to be erased and the medium rewritten.

A magnetic tape of the present invention comprises a plurality of servo bands and servo signals for performing tracking-control of a magnetic head, wherein the servo signals are recorded on the servo bands, wherein a DC magnetization region magnetized in one direction by direct current is arranged along longitudinal directions of the magnetic tape on the servo bands, wherein each of the servo signals is magnetized in a reverse direction for the one direction of a DC magnetization and is recorded within the DC magnetization region, and wherein any of a relative ratio and relative difference of DC magnetization intensity in the DC magnetization region and recording magnetization intensity of each of the servo signals differs for each of the servo bands.

A servo writer according to the present invention is a servo writer which writes a servo signal on a servo band of a magnetic tape. A method of erasing a servo pattern of a hard disk drive includes reading a servo pattern recorded on a disk, generating an erase pattern to erase the servo pattern based on the servo pattern obtained in the reading of the servo pattern, and erasing the servo pattern by using the erase pattern while the disk is rotated. The servo pattern recorded on the hard disk drive may be uniformly erased. Also, a stabilization time to stabilize a read/write head after the position control of the read/write head that is needed when a servo writer is used may be avoided so that a time to erase a servo pattern may be reduced.
