Embodiment Construction

[0021] Described herein are exemplary storage network architectures, data architectures, and methods for creating and using differential files in a storage network. The methods described herein can be embodied as logic instructions on a computer readable medium. When executed on a processor, the logic instructions cause a general purpose computing device to be programmed as a special purpose machine for implementing the methods. When configured by logic instructions to perform the methods described herein, the processor constitutes structure for performing the methods

[0022] Demonstration Network Architecture

[0023] The subject matter described herein can be implemented in a storage architecture that provides virtualized data storage at the system level, such that virtualization is implemented in a SAN. In implementations described herein, computing systems utilizing storage devices are referred to as hosts. In a typical implementation, a host is any computing system th...

Abstract

Exemplary storage network architectures, data architectures, and methods for creating and using snapdifference files in storage networks are described. One exemplary method may be implemented in a processor in a storage network. The method comprises receiving a request to execute a snapclone operation; generating, in response to the received service request, a snapclone copy of a source disk volume; contemporaneous with the generation of the snapclone file, opening a first snapdifference file; and recording I / O operations to the source disk volume in the snapdifference file. The methods described herein may be embodied as logic instructions on a computer-readable medium.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter relates to electronic computing and, more specifically, to replication operations in storage networks. Background technique [0002] The ability to copy and store the contents of a storage device is an important feature of a storage system. Data can be stored in parallel in case of failure of a single storage device or medium. In the event of a failure of the first storage device or medium, the system can then retrieve a copy of the data contained in the second storage device or medium. The ability to copy and store the content of the storage device also facilitates the creation of a permanent record of the content when copied. This feature allows users to restore previous versions of data that were inadvertently edited or erased. [0003] There are space and processing costs associated with copying and storing the contents of the storage device. For example, some storage devices cannot accept input / output (I / O) operations while ...
