Problems solved by technology

However, there are still some problems in the preparation of compositions comprising metal ions for the control of bad breath
These problems include: the presence of high levels of metal cations may often destabilize other elements in the composition; metal ions tend to chelate with other products and thus become ineffective; tightly controlled regulatory limitations and products tend to be more astringent, Therefore have unacceptable mouthfeel characteristics
[0013] Without being bound by theory, it is believed that when compositions are formulated that include polyphosphate species having chain lengths greater than or equal to 3 in combination with metal cations, the cations can complex with the polyphosphates, which reduces their anti-halitosis efficacy

Embodiment

[0109] The following examples further illustrate preferred embodiments within the scope of the present invention. These examples are given merely to illustrate the invention and are not to be construed as limiting the invention, since many changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. All ingredients are expressed as percent by weight of the composition unless otherwise indicated.

[0110] Element

[0111] * Commercially available grade with an average particle size of 133μm; ** Coarse grinding grade, the average particle size is greater than 200μm

Embodiment I to VI

[0112] Examples I to VI: Chewing Gum: Melt the gum base in a delta blade mixer to 55°C to 60°C. Add the overall sweetener and glycerin and mix. Add active substance and mix. Mix in the flavoring at the end. Remove from heat and cool before molding and cutting. The coating precast solution is sprayed onto the cooled resin in a thin layer, which is allowed to dry before applying subsequent layers. Sufficient coating is added such that the total weight of the coating is 20% to 30% of the weight of the final finished pellet.

Abstract

A confectionery composition comprising: (i) a polyphosphate material with an average anion chain length of greater than or equal to 3; (ii) greater than about 10ppm of a first metal cation selected from the metals of groups 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 of the periodic table; (iii) less than about 10 % water; and (iv) a suitable confectionery carrier material wherein the ratio of polyphosphate anion to metal cation is in the range of from about 10:1 to about 1:1. The present invention relates to stable portable oral care confectionery compositions which provide enhanced oral malodour benefits combined with enhanced anti-calculus benefits.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a confectionery composition comprising a polyphosphate having an average anionic chain length greater than or equal to 3; a metal cation, wherein the ratio of polyphosphate to metal cation is from about 10:1 to about 1:1, and wherein the confectionery composition comprises less than 10% water by weight of the composition. Preferably, the present invention relates to non-cariogenic or so-called "sugar-free" chewing gum confectionery compositions. More particularly, the present invention relates to compositions for treating or preventing bad breath, treating or preventing dental calculus and having a surface conditioning effect on the oral cavity of a user. The compositions of the present invention are suitable for use in humans or animals. Background of the invention [0002] Bad breath, or halitosis, generally refers to an unpleasant odor that is caused by the accumulation of volatile sulfur compounds, carboxylic a...
