Embodiment Construction

[0014] An example will now be described based on an electronic music download (EMD) application for purchasing music tracks, downloading the tracks from the Internet and storing them on a record carrier such as a recordable disc.

[0015] In this application, however, the term "digital work" refers to any work that has been reduced to a digital representation. This includes any audiovisual, textual or multimedia work and accompanying translators (eg software) required to reconstruct said work. The term "usage rights" refers to any rights granted to recipients of digital works. Generally, these rights define how a digital work can be used and whether it can be redistributed. Each right of use has one or more specific conditions that must be met in order for said right of use to be exercised. Usage rights are always "attached" to digital works. The right of use is also attached to the copy of the digital work. In this way, the right to use and any associated fees specified b...

Abstract

The invention relates to a record carrier for storing a digital work (DW). The record carrier (10) comprises access information (KLT) for accessing the digital work and a secondary path (HC) in which is stored secondary path information (KLK) for encrypting, decrypting or verifying said access information (KLT) . In order to avoid, prevent or impede tampering with the access information, the auxiliary channel (HC) is stored on the record carrier at substantially the same physical location as the access information (KLT). In a preferred embodiment, when the access information (KLT) changes, the auxiliary path information (KLK) changes accordingly. This enables a record carrier that is resistant to replay cryptographic attacks. The invention also relates to a method for recording a digital work on a record carrier, a recording device and a reading device.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a record carrier for storing a digital work, a method for recording a digital work on a record carrier, a recording device and a reading device. Background technique [0002] European patent application with application number EP00202888.4 (PH-NL000448) (not yet published) describes a method for controlling the distribution and use of digital works. In said method, a usage right information is affixed to said digital work before storing said digital work, and this usage right information is affixed to a record carrier. The additional usage rights information is updated with each use of the digital work and is encrypted or authenticated with hidden information stored in a hidden path on the record carrier. When the usage right information changes, the hidden information also changes. In this way, bypassing of usage right information attached to a digital work by "copy and recovery password attack" (so-called replay password at...
