Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present invention discloses methods and apparatus for scheduling entities and projects using quota and margin values, particularly in communication and computer systems. The embodiments described herein include numerous elements and limitations, no single element or limitation being the definitive element or limitation. Each claim is taken as a separate recitation of an aspect of the invention. Also, some of the described embodiments may include, but are not limited to, systems, networks, integrated circuit chips, embedded processors, ASICs, methods, computer-readable media containing instructions, and the like. The embodiments described hereinafter include aspects and configurations within the scope and spirit of the invention, and the drawings illustrate exemplary rather than restrictive configurations.

[0024] As used herein, the term "packet" refers to all types of packets or any other unit of information or data, including but not limited to fixed-length cell...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for scheduling items (e.g., packets, processes, etc.) in a system, such as, but not limited to a computer or communications system (e.g., router, switch, etc.) In one implementation, multiple sets of items requiring processing to be performed are maintained. A current set of the multiple sets of items is identified. Each of the items in the current set is processed. In one implementation, this processing includes identifying a particular item in the current set, adding a quantum to a deficit of the particular item, processing an entity corresponding to the particular item, decreasing the deficit of the particular item by a value, determining if the deficit allows the particular item to be further processed, and moving the particular item from the currentset to another of the multiple sets of items after said determining if deficit allows the particular item to be further processed.

Description

technical field [0001] In particular, the present invention relates to the scheduling of information and / or processes, such as those used in communication and computer systems; more particularly, the present invention relates to the use of quantum and deficit values to schedule entities and items , which includes but is not limited to scheduling the transmission of packets in a packet-switched system. Background technique [0002] The communications industry is changing rapidly to adapt to emerging technologies and ever-increasing customer demands. This customer demand for new applications as well as higher performance for existing applications is driving communication network and system providers to adopt faster, higher capacity (eg, higher bandwidth) networks and systems. One approach common to many communications providers in attempting to achieve these goals is to use packet-switching technology. People are increasingly using various packet technologies such as Inter...
