Embodiment Construction

[0074] The invention will now be described with reference to preferred embodiments illustrating the use of screens formed from electroresponsive materials such as LCD or electroluminescent materials, and / or other materials that can change the opacity of a simulated flame To provide electric stove.

[0075] In the case of screens formed from electroluminescent materials, it will be appreciated that electroluminescent materials are well known per se. Electroluminescence is when a material emits light when it is subjected to an electric field. Phosphor electroluminescence was discovered in the early 20th century and was initially applied to electroluminescent powder lamps with limited success. The technology was further developed in the 1980s, resulting in flexible electroluminescent phosphors that were incorporated into LCD displays as backlights. Such flexible phosphor materials are fabricated by embedding or encapsulating the phosphor within a matrix such as glass or polymer...

Abstract

The invention describes a simulated flame fire comprising a housing configured to support an active display screen. The display screen is responsive to an electrical signal to provide a flame effect display which may be viewed by a viewer to the front of the fire. The fire includes a first artificial fuel bed and a second artificial fuel bed. By positioning the display screen between the first and second artificial fuel beds the displayed flames appear to emanate from the centre of the fuel bed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device for producing optical effects, more particularly to a device for simulating fire, especially the flames of a fire, and to a simulated furnace comprising such a device. Background technique [0002] Simulated furnaces are well known and marketed. Such a simulated furnace achieves a high level of realism when simulating glowing embers, especially flames. However, there is always room for improvement. Most simulated furnaces currently on the market use electromechanical devices to simulate flames. A known device of this type is typified by the device described in GB2 230 335, which comprises a light source, a viewing screen, and a reflective "flag" mounted behind the viewing screen. The flag is illuminated by a light source and viewed through a viewing screen. The flag billowed in the strong wind. The screen viewing screen partially diffuses the light, which enhances the sight of flames created by the billowi...
