Problems solved by technology

These banknote alignment mechanisms are complex and, therefore, significantly increase the cost of the banknote acceptor
Also, they are unreliable and do not accurately guide the banknotes along the desired path
[0005] As described in US-A-5680472, it has been proposed to scan banknotes and convert all scanned data for counting, but this process involves a lot of data and is slow to calculate

Embodiment Construction

[0029] The example of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings is for accepting banknotes, as used herein, the term "banknote" refers to what is also known as "paper money" and in the United States also known as "currency" or "bills", where required A promissory note, especially from a central bank or other government agency, that is paid in money to the bearer.

[0030] Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the banknote acceptor according to the invention receives banknotes 1 through an inlet 2 wider than the banknotes so that the banknotes pass a sensing station S to an outlet 4 along a channel 3 as shown in phantom outline.

[0031] A solenoid operated gate 5 is located at the exit 4 to direct acceptable banknotes along the accept path as shown by arrow 6, or rotated to a position as shown in phantom outline to direct unacceptable notes along the reject path 7 as shown in phantom outline banknote. Alternatively, as described in more detail below, unacceptable banknot...

Abstract

An acceptor device for sheet objects such as banknotes, comprises a sensor (19) to derive data corresponding to a spatial array of data samples from a face of a sheet object, said data being configured in a sampling frame (Fl) that lies within a range of positional relationships to a reference frame (F2); and a processor (22) operable to process the data to determine the relationship between the reference frame and the sampling frame for the sensed data, and being operable to transform pre-selected regions (52, 53, 54)of the sensed data from the sampling frame so as to correspond to data in the reference frame, to make a comparison of the transformed data with reference data corresponding to the pre-selected regions in the reference frame and to the sheet object depending on the outcome of the comparison.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to acceptor devices for sheet-shaped objects such as banknotes. Background technique [0002] Banknote acceptors are well known for use in vending and gaming machines. In a typical banknote acceptor, banknotes are inserted through an entry slot and driven along a channel through a laterally extending array of sensors that sense features on one or more surfaces of the banknote. It is known to use optical sensors arranged in an array to detect successive rows of data samples from the surface of a banknote as the banknote passes through the array. The sensing means may operate in a transmissive mode in which the light source is arranged to send light through the banknote to the sensors of the array. Alternatively, light from the light source may be reflected from the surface of the banknote to the optical sensor. [0003] Data from the sensors can be digitized and compared with reference data corresponding to acceptable ba...
