Background technique [0001] There are two scans that may be used by a wireless local area network (WLAN) client device to search for a wireless local area network with which it is associated. In passive scanning, the device listens for beacon frames broadcast by access points (APs), typically one communication channel at a time. The beacon frame includes the Service Set Identifier (SSID) of the WLAN that the AP has. Since beacon frames are typically broadcast at regular intervals of approximately 100 ms, the device typically must "dwell" on each channel for approximately 105 ms before trying a different channel assuming no AP is present on that channel. In an active scan, the device sends an active probe request over a communication channel where active probes are permitted by administrative rules. The device may receive one or more probe responses from the AP. A probe response can be received within 15ms of sending an active probe request. If no probe response is received...
