Abstract

The invention relates to a recoverable gabion (1) used for protecting military or civilian installations from being assaulted by weapons or from being destroyed by natural forces, such as flood waters, lava flows, avalanches, soil instability, slope erosion, etc. The gabion (1) comprises opposed side walls (2, 3). The opposed side walls (2, 3) comprise a plurality of side wall elements (14, 15) connected together at spaced intervals by a plurality of partition walls (4, 5, 6) so that spaces between adjacent pairs of partition walls define individual compartments (7, 8, 9) of the gabion together with the side walls, and adjacent side wall and partition wall are connected with each other by pivotal connecting devices (41) which enable the gabion to be folded between a fully flat configuration and a fully deployed configuration, wherein at least one of the pivotal connecting devices (43) is a releasable connecting device which allows the side wall element to open relatively to the gabion when released so as to allow access from the side of the gabion to any contents of the gabion compartments.
