Embodiment Construction

[0025] As will be appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art, the term "display device" as used throughout herein refers to any device that utilizes movable particles to display an image that can be viewed by a viewer, including but not limited to IPS electrophoretic displays having a common electrode surrounding each pixel , the electrode operates as a guard electrode and a collector electrode; and an IPS electrophoretic display with the guard electrode fabricated into a thin film structure in the display plane. The term also refers to electrophoretic displays that do not have a common electrode. Display devices may, but need not, conform to the standard IPS AMLCD infrastructure.

[0026] The term "pixel" as used herein refers to a specific unit-like structure included in a display device. The cell-like structures are not limited in size, shape or design and thus can encompass a wide variety of shapes and structures, including sub-pixels, that can be used to fabricate...

Abstract

A pixel (101) havs an upper substrate (203) and a base carrier (205) disposed opposite each other; a dielectric fluid (219) with dispersed electrophoretic particles (221) is filled in a gap between the upper substrate and the base carrier; a wall (207) disposed on at least one of the upper substrate and the base carrier between adjacent pixels, prevents migration of the electrophoretic particles between the adjacent pixels; a surrounding electrode (209) is disposed in proximity to the wall and extends substantially parallel to an interior surface of the wall; and a facilitating structure (213) is positioned along an inner surface of the surrounding electrode, and has a curved inner surface, wherein the facilitating structure is electrically floating relative to the surrounding electrode. The pixels may be used with particles that are colored, black white, and / or reflective. The pixels may incorporate color filters therein.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to electrophoretic displays, and in particular to in-plane electrophoretic displays with improved switching characteristics. Background technique [0002] An electrophoretic display device is a reflective or transmissive display that uses charged particles in a dielectric fluid (liquid or gas) at the pixel locations to provide a viewer with a visually recognizable image. An example of an electrophoretic display device is provided in US Patent No. 8,612,758 to Lee et al. (the '758 patent), the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. The device in the '758 patent includes substrates positioned opposite each other with a gap therebetween, a colored dielectric liquid in the gap, charged particles dispersed in the liquid, and electrodes disposed along the substrates. By applying electric fields of different polarities to the device, particles can be caused to migrate from one electrode to the other. Thi...
