System and method for extracting calendar events from free-form email

A system and method are described for automatically detecting calendar events within a free-form email message. For example, a system according to one embodiment of the invention for automatically detecting calendar events within a free-form email message potentially including one or more attachments comprising: a pre-processor to detect one or more keywords within a free-form email message and/or free-form attachments, the keywords indicating whether the free-form email message or free-form attachments contain a calendar event, the pre-processor identifying the free-form email message and/or free-form attachments as potentially containing calendar data upon detecting the one or more keywords; and a natural language processor to further process text from the free-form email message and/or free-form attachments to determine whether the free-form email message and/or free-form attachments contain a calendar event, the natural language processor to parse the email message and/or attachments and evaluate the email message and/or attachments using natural language processing (NLP) techniques to determine the existence of one or more calendar events; and a calendar event generator to extract calendar data from the email message and/or attachments in response to the natural language processor detecting a calendar event, the calendar event generator to update a calendar using the extracted calendar data.

The present invention facilitates the specification and distribution of templated content materials by a content provider over an information exchange network such as the Internet. The present invention incorporates a system for managing inventories of graphical elements and their relationships to pre-defined page templates. A database capable of keeping track of users and their corresponding access privileges within the system is employed to monitor user activity. Ultimately, through the use of a software component delivered over the Internet for use within standard web browsers, end-users are able to populate templates under the constraints imposed by the rules of the manufacturers at the time of template design. These population elements which “fill in the blanks” of the pre-defined templates may be either of type IMAGE or TEXT. Image regions are populated by choosing from a subset of the entire image inventory, while TEXT types can be completely free form, with specific rules guiding justification, point size, font, and leading, or “fill in the blank” form with the same constraint rules as free form. Once the end user has met all of the criteria for a fully populated template, the system provides sophisticated means for downloading a high resolution file (such as a print-ready file or other file representation of the composed publication) which encapsulates all resources needed (layout, images, fonts, and constraint geometries) to fulfill the requirements of the publication. The downloaded file may be printed or published by electronic transfer, e.g., to a publisher for printing of the actual publication.

System, method and program product for answering questions using a search engine

The present invention is a system, method, and program product that comprises a computer with a collection of documents to be searched. The documents contain free form (natural language) text. We define a set of labels called QA-Tokens, which function as abstractions of phrases or question-types. We define a pattern file, which consists of a number of pattern records, each of which has a question template, an associated question word pattern, and an associated set of QA-Tokens. We describe a query-analysis process which receives a query as input and matches it to one or more of the question templates, where a priority algorithm determines which match is used if there is more than one. The query-analysis process then replaces the associated question word pattern in the matching query with the associated set of QA-Tokens, and possibly some other words. This results in a processed query having some combination of original query tokens, new tokens from the pattern file, and QA-Tokens, possibly with weights. We describe a pattern-matching process that identifies patterns of text in the document collection and augments the location with corresponding QA-Tokens. We define a text index data structure which is an inverted list of the locations of all of the words in the document collection, together with the locations of all of the augmented QA-Tokens. A search process then matches the processed query against a window of a user-selected number of sentences that is slid across the document texts. A hit-list of top-scoring windows is returned to the user.

A freeform fabrication method for making a three-dimensional food object from a design created on a computer, including: (a) providing a support member by which the object is supported while being constructed; (b) operating a material dispensing head for dispensing a continuous or intermittent strand of food composition in a fluent state; this food composition including a liquid ingredient and a primary body-building food material and the dispensed food composition having a rigidity and strength sufficient for permitting the food composition to be built up layer by layer into a three-dimensional shape in a non-solid state; and (c) operating control devices for generating control signals in response to coordinates of the object design and controlling the position of the dispensing head relative to the support member in response to the control signals to control dispensing of the food composition to construct a 3-D shape of this object. The method optionally includes an additional step of applying a heat treatment to the 3-D shape after this 3-D shape is constructed. This method can be used to form an intricate shape of a cake mix, which is then baked in an oven. It can also be used to form a custom-designed decorative shape on the top surface of a pre-made cake.

Automatic topic identification and switch for natural language search of textual document collections

A method for iteratively drilling-down on a user's textual free-form natural language query uses a session history to interpret successive queries in the context of previous queries on a topic or topics and to detect an implicit switch in topic. By maintaining a session history of the user's free-form natural language input and by automatically determining whether there is a topic or context switch, the search process is substantially simplified and is more effective; that is, more accurate answers to a user's queries are found faster. In addition, as the system operates on free-form natural language input, automatically constructing the actual search expressions, the complexity of constructing successive search expressions is obviated. If the system determines the user is, according to its session history and tests, asking successive questions within a given topic or context, the system keeps searching within a previously determined given set of previous responses on that context or topic. This effectively narrows the documents found allowing the user to quickly and accurately find just the documents of interest. If the system determines the user has implicitly changed context or topic, based on its session history and tests, it searches all the information at its disposal; i.e., all of the collections of documents.
