Embodiment 1-4

[0083] Examples 1-3 are not according to the invention, but are intended for comparison.

[0084] A series of curable coating compositions were prepared with varying amounts of calcium sulfate and the various compositions were used as coatings.

[0085] After the coating was formed, the tensile strength was measured at intervals from 2 hours.

[0086] Flexibility at 6 months was also measured.

[0087] Details of the composition are summarized in Table 1 along with the results of the tensile strength and flexibility measurements.

[0088] All parts used are by weight.

[0089] R.H. means relative humidity.

[0090] HAC means high alumina cement.

[0091] Table 1

[0092]

[0093] * Secar 71 is a HAC containing >68.5% alumina and has a monocalcium aluminate content of about 65% by weight.

[0094] ** Taevalon 705 was obtained from Air Products Korea and was an emulsion of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer in water containing about 54.5% by weight polymer solids.

Embodiment 5 and 6

[0099] Examples 5 and 6 are examples according to the present invention. Different amounts of fiber were included in Examples 5 and 6.

[0100] The tensile strength of the coating obtained from the composition was measured at time intervals from 2 hours after the coating was formed.

[0101] Details of the composition and tensile strength measurements are shown in Table 2.

[0102] Table 2

[0103]

[0104] * Polypropylene fibers with a length of 4 mm are sold under the trade name Fibrin 18.

[0105] HAC was Secar 71 used in Examples 1-4.

[0106] Determination of tensile strength

[0107] According to ASTM D412-98a, the sample was cast in a dumbbell-shaped mold with a depth of 3 mm.

[0108] After 2 hours the samples were stripped and (in the case of 2 hours) tested immediately or allowed to cure at 25°C and 65% R.H. until tested. The test procedure is as follows: The specimen is broken at a rate of 10 mm / min on a Hounsfield Tensometer equipped with a 5000N load cel...

Embodiment 7-12

[0113] A series of compositions were prepared with varying amounts of fiber and used as coatings.

[0114] HAC and fibers were the same as those used in Examples 5 and 6.

[0115] After the coating was formed, the tensile strength was measured at intervals from 2 hours.

[0116] Flexibility at 6 months was also measured.

[0117] The details of the compositions are reported in Table 3 along with the results of the tensile strength measurements.

[0118] table 3

[0119]

[0120] The flexibility of the coating at 6 months was essentially the same as in Examples 5 and 6.

[0121] The results in Table 3 show a surprising effect: the addition of fiber to the composition resulted in a much greater percentage increase in tensile strength at 2 and 4 hours than at 24 hours.

Abstract

A settable composition comprising (i) a cementitious component comprising at least 25 % of calcium aluminate of which at least 40 % is calcium monoaluminate said cementitious component optionally containing one or more particulate fillers but containing less than 10 % by weight of calcium sulphate, the % being by weight being based on the weight of the cementitious component and (ii) an aqueous emulsion of an organic polymer, the amount of (ii) in relation to (i) being such as to provide a weight ratio of polymer solids to weight of (i) of from 0.5:1 to 10:1, preferably 0.6:1 to 2.5:1 or (iii) a dispersible organic polymer and where the amount of dispersible polymer is such as to give a weight ratio of polymer to weight of (i) of from 0.5:1 to 10:1, preferably 0.6:1 to 2.5:1. The cementitious component (i) preferably contains an amount of fibre effective to improve the tensile strength of coatings obtained from the settable composition but not exceeding 5 % by weight of the cementitious component (i). The dry composition comprising parts (i) and (iii) above can be mixed with water in the mine.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the Chinese invention patent application named "cement composition and its use method" with the application date of April 10, 2002 and application number 02808103.X. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to materials suitable for coating surfaces, especially rocky surfaces, to methods for their preparation and to methods of surface treatment using the materials of the invention. Background technique [0003] Coatings have been proposed in the past to be applied to rock surfaces in mines for the purpose of providing support or gas barriers by spraying an aqueous emulsion of an organic polymer and allowing the emulsion to coagulate to create a film or gas barrier on the surface. A flexible coating in the form of a skin. Polymers that have been disclosed for this purpose include polyurethanes and polychloroprene. The latter has been disclosed in South African Patent No. 8203384. [0004] More recently WO ...
